A message from the President

 by Bill Shute

It all began in a Washington, DC home in 1904.  What was originally formed as a social club of Texans living in our nation’s capital has evolved into the largest state society in Washington D.C.  As the Texas State Society enters its centennial year, I am honored to serve as the 74th TSS president.

As stated in the Society’s constitution, the objective of the State Society is to “encourage and promote good fellowship among Texans in the area of the Nation’s Capital.”  Over the years, this directive has been fulfilled through many fun and entertaining events, and the coming year will be no different.

The current Board of Directors and I are planning many great events this year, such as the perennial favorite, the Father’s Day Picnic, to the Cherry Blossom events, the Annual Golf Tournament, our LBJ Tribute, and the always crowded Congressional Reception.  In addition, we will be planning the much anticipated 2005 Black Tie & Boots Inaugural Ball – the centerpiece event of our Centennial celebration.

In addition, stay tuned for details about an exciting event planned for October of this year.  The State Society has a unique opportunity to bring rare symbols of Texas History to Washington.  We are planning to bring a set of the original flags flown over Texas soil during periods of significant state history.  Included in this collection are flags flown during the fight for independence.  In addition, we will be have the rare “28th Star” American flag, the official U.S. flag that recognized the admission of Texas to the Union.

If you are new to the area, I encourage you to join the Texas State Society.  Our membership is over 3,000 strong today and new members are signing up each month.  And if you have been a member for some time now, make sure you visit the website often.  We will be updating the site with new capabilities that will enhance your membership and keep you informed of upcoming events.

I look forward to serving the Society as President this year and to celebrating with you the rich legacy of this great institution.

Bill Shute
2003 President, Texas State Society
