Dear Fellow Texans and Texas Enthusiasts,
On April 21st, 2009, the 173rd anniversary of the Battle of San
Jacinto, the membership of the Texas State Society of Washington, D.C., met at the newly minted
Capitol Visitors Center for ourannual business meeting. As a result of those proceedings, I was
honored to be chosen to lead the Society for the upcoming year, which promises to be a busy one!
First, though, I want to express my sincere appreciation to my predecessor, Senator John Cornyn,
for his superb stewardship of the Society over the past year, during which we enjoyed an outstanding
reprise of the TSS' trademark quadrennial event, the Black Tie & Boots Inaugural Ball. It was an
honor to serve under the Senator's leadership during these past months, and on behalf of the entire
TSS membership, I extend a very heartfelt "Thank you!"
This year, following on the success of Black Tie & Boots (with special thanks to this year's
inaugural ball chair, Ed Perez), the Texas State Society will continue to host the great events that
have become "musts" for any Texan's social calendar, while also hoping to add a few new items
to our Texas agenda. Of course, the Society's favorite annual event, the Father's Day Picnic, will be
held on Sunday, June 21st, at Smokey Glen Farm in Gaithersburg,
Maryland. Then, in late summer, we will gather at the LBJ Memorial Grove to celebrate the life and
administration of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Of course, our fall season would be incomplete
without the Terlingua Two-Step, an evening of fun and fellowship that promises lively entertainment,
appetizing food and drink, and, of course, great dancing!
Over the course of the coming year, in addition to the Congressional Reception and Cherry Blossom
Reception to be held in early 2010, the Society intends to revive the popular "Texas Breakfast"
events of years past. Additionally, we will be planning events for the purpose of expressing appreciation
to our corporate sponsors. Finally, the 2009-2010 Officers and Board of Directors seek to culminate the
upcoming term with a celebration of the historic Battle of San Jacinto, in conjunction with the Annual
Business Meeting next April.
The Board joins me in inviting newcomers to the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area to join the Texas
State Society. You are welcome to join by contacting our office at 301.809.8989 or via the Web site
(www.texasstatesociety.org). On the Web site, you can find
important information regarding any of the great events planned for the year, as well as Texas-related
news and a section dedicated to our event sponsors who--through their generous contributions--help to
ensure the success of our events. Please join us for the fun and excitement that we have planned this year!
